this video is priceless , thanks for sharing it you are an angle in CG thanks man!
Thanks!
Concise and clear! I learned a lot in a short amount of time. Thanks!
Thanks. Glad you learned something!
Hello! This video is amazing, I am writing you in name of the ECAM, the Film school of Madrid. We are developing a VFX course and we'd love to be able to include some fragments of this video in one of the courses. Small fragments, seconds. Let me know if this would be posible or if there is another way of contacting you to explain this in more detail. Thank you!

@@CGStirk I just sent you an email!

I think I have subscribed the right person 🫡 .Such a great work brother 👏🏻 paying lakhs of money to the universities is worthless and also waste of money & time feeling regret after watching your professional tutorials. I just need a small help from your side brother ?
Thank you! Yes! If you can find the education for free, that often beats a university. Glad I could help.
Could you please tell me why you chose to bring the VDB into the scene instead of rendering the effect in embergen and compositing it? I have a smoke simulation in an animation I've done and am trying to figure out the best workflow. The smoke simulation has several things colliding with it as well as being occluded behind a pot that it's emitting from. My biggest concern with bringing it into Maya is wont look the same as it looks in embergen with the particles! Thanks in advance
The dust needs to interact with the environment and the ship, which is more difficult to fake. Also, the ship occludes the dust at the back. It's possible to render from Embergen and then comp back, but it's not what I wanted to do for this, especially that the point was really to show how to use render layers. I agree that it can be difficult to get the same look outside of Embergen, though.
@@CGStirk Thanks for the response! Do you know if there is a way to bring your animated objects and camera into Embergen and render an exr seq that occludes your object in the correct place? Almost like a render mask? In your example it would occlude the smoke behind the ship? Hope that makes sense!
@@sarulaplays6861 You can bring in a mesh in the newer versions of it. I would like to think you can make it a hold-out object, but I'm not sure.
@@sarulaplays6861 I am so sorry. I thought I had replied to this! So, yes you can bring in a model, at least in the more recent releases, and I would assume you can make it a hold-out object but I've not tried it!
Please help , when i do double click on composition or and any selective layer then whole software hang
Hmm, is your computer capable of running After Effects?
I wanted to properly thank you in-class but i got shy and walked away. Thank you for the wonderful Semester you gave us and i was happy to hear we gave you a good one as well. I'm Grateful of your knowledge and I had fun, even if AE isn't really my field of work. It's sad to see you go already but c'est la vie. Thanks again and I'm positive I'll use these skills you taught us in the future!
Thank you very much for your kind words. I'm glad you learned some AE, and hopefully you can apply the concepts later down the road. If you ever need anything, feel free to reach out here or via the contact info I send out on Canvas. Have a great summer!
Setting the colorspace and linearizing it is something I have been looking for forever! I avoided using extractor because it was always darker. Thanks!!!
You're welcome. You should check out the video on ACEScg in Maya since the workflow for this series is only for linear sRGB and is quite dated.

Doesnt the beauty pass have all thise passes already baked in? So adding afditional "copies" in top just makes them more intense? Is thwre a way to render those passes separately without noise in the same way that the framebuffer is compositing them internally? Thanks!
Yes, the beauty is most of these passes combined. AO is additional, in this case. However, you don't use the beauty with this compositing method, so you're not adding intensity to it, you're recreating it. Not sure what you mean by rendering without noise. If you mean denoising, then yes, but this tutorial doesn't go over it. Actually this whole series is pretty out-of-date. The materials aren't even PBR. For denoising in V-Ray, you enable the Denoiser AOV and then you need to enable denoising on each separate AOV.
@@CGStirk thanks for the quick response! I've been trying to figure out how to build a composite of a CGI screen from scratch in compositing vs starting with a beauty/combined pass at the bottom of the stack so I can have total control over each layer's influence. Feels like a powerful way to do it but I've only ever seen passes come out noisy even with noise pass driven denoisers built into modern render engines. The only time I've seen something close is in vfx breakdowns of blockbuster films but often they are still using common render engines like crazy and would like to know how that is achieved.
@@MHM4V3R1CK This is how you do it with V-Ray ruclips.net/video/9C-trY4RLBc/видео.htmlfeature=shared&t=23485 For Arnold, I believe you do it with an Imager and there's a layer selection field for choosing the layers you want to denoise. What renderer are you using?
@@CGStirk Thank you for the info! I'm using Corona and vray depending on the job in 3ds max and for simpler product work I'm using blender and cycles.
@@MHM4V3R1CK I would imagine there's a way to do it in Corona and Cycles. I don't use that software though.
Hey, i'm trying to follow your tutorial, but the clouds don't show after clicking "no presets" can you help me?
For anyone else reading this, the issue was the loading the volume from a cloud storage drive, which caused an issue with the path.

Outstanding video! Loaded with important info most tutorials on Paint Effects don’t have. Thanks!

I'd rather just upscale with Handbrake because It only adjusts the resolution. It doesn't adjust the detail, grain, or etc.
If that's all you need, then just do that!

do you know how can we make the range slider works that is made using hmtl but not through the puzzle of verg3d?
Not off hand, but you might see if there are any ThreeJS sliders on threejs.org/examples
Great job you've done with verg3d
Thanks!
How do I change the color of text once I've added fractal noise to the text?
As long as the fractal noise is added to a matte layer and not the text itself, you just change the text color or fill in the text layer.
Sir, please make an indepth tutorial on Color Profile Conversion and the theory behind it in After Effects.
Thanks for the suggestion. Google "color transforms" and you can find out more about what that effect is doing.
Is there a way to move the HDRI up and down on the y axis?
Yes. On the Dome Light, enable "Finite Dome". You can change the projection height there. If you can't go low enough, then click on the input connection of the Dome Tex to get to the "VRayPlaceEnvTex" node. Select "Use transform" and then just move the dome with the transform tools. Hope that helps.
That's some really cool stuff!
Thanks!
Not sure if you mentioned it or not but do you think this workflow/layer rendering would work fine for Arnold > After Effects? I've cooked a beautiful scene for Pwnisher's Eternal Ascent... But I'd really like to render my scene out in layers, at the very least I'd like my two characters to be separated from the environment, but would also be cool to render even more passes... The scene also uses Ai atmosphere, I'm wondering if I could render a fog pass the same way you rendered the clouds..? Not sure because I'm pretty sure I would need an alpha channel/black so I could set the blending mode to screen and I'm praying that the characters shadows will still be cast!
Arnold AOVs have different names, but it's essentially the same workflow. Same for the render layers. I believe Arnold has a shadow catcher material.
Awesome, I've cooked some of my best work for Pwnisher's Eternal Ascent challenge and would love to render it like a pro! I always render my entire scene as a single EXR sequence...... Noob moves.@@CGStirk

Hello @CGStirk and folks. Firstly, I would like to thank you for the great effort you have put into creating this content. I have a question if anybody have a same problem. I set the project on Maya and I put the images in the sourceimages folder. But it's not uploading as UDIM. I'm using Maya 2024 and Vray ple version. I got this message: setAttr -type "string" file2.fileTextureName "sourceimages/rctextures/razorCrest_v004_mainMat_BaseColor.<UDIM>.tif";
I would check to make sure all the textures in the UDIM sequence are there. Also, UDIMs don't display in the viewport so check the render.
im getting the same error where it says that my UDIMS dont exist?
i tried switching the uv tiling method to UDIMs Mari and the tiles get detected
yo idk if youve figured it out yet, but switching the tiling to UDIMS did it for me
Glad y ou got it working@@zho07

U taught me 2 things I am having to go to art school and they are forcing me to learn Maya even thoe I use C4D it’s so good to know redshift carry’s over n works for different softwares, but yeah nodes are super complex when u first start out but this is a great tutorial man helps so so much this will really help improve my textures it’s nice I can follow along and 9/10 things are just interchangeable variables I can get behind n understand so cheers! This is really gonna up my game with textures to look as good as Pixar or any triple A game thanks!
A coworker uses C4D, and we often discuss the similarities between Maya and C4D. Glad it helped!
@@CGStirk it feels kinda counter productive to go backwards so it’s cool they have a lot of similarities, so hopefully I can skip along if they are one in the same, and I know there are just as good renderers like octane and Arnold but just knowing redshift can carry over and uses the same nodes I believe is a big bonus too
Always fun to find the RC out in the wild :) I'm glad it was put to good use!
Thank you very much for your model and for making it available to everyone!

This tutorial is insane! I have one question? It's possibile that using after effect 2023, I shouldn't use color profile converter applied for obtained the same result? That's because if I follow your same steps, from render in vray to composite in after effect, the image shows darker then my Vray Frame buffer. Thanks in advance
Thanks! You can still use the plugin, and the results should match exactly. Double-check that the comp itself is linearized. However, in the latest versions of AE, you can use their built-in OCIO. When you import the frames, right-click them and select Interpret Footage, then make sure they're set to ACEScg.

You might be able to parent the layers to a null layer and move over the null. Or, you could make the composition larger.
I love this series! Even though I am not a Vray user. It has been beneficial for ACES setup, by the way. I've been trying to find information about how to mix or blend normal maps and bump maps in a Vray material. We have a very easy way either in Arnold or Redshift but it's been a challenge for me to find clear information about it. Do you know some tricks that you can share? Thank you so much. I am looking forward to the next series !!!
Thanks! For blending normal maps, you can either use a custom OSL node or you can stack multiple V-Ray Bump Mtls together.
